Construction companies working near water, forests or environmentally sensitive sites may switch from conventional mineral oil to biodegradable hydraulic fluid. That change can reduce environmental impact from accidental release, but it also changes the chemical environment inside the pump. An FKM seal that performed well for years in mineral oil should not be assumed suitable for every biodegradable formulation. The exact base stock, additives, temperature and water contamination level all influence elastomer behavior.
Commercial biodegradable fluids can be based on vegetable oils, synthetic esters, polyalkylene glycols or other synthetic base stocks. Their additive packages also differ. Some biodegradable fluids are sensitive to water and aging conditions. Moisture can affect fluid properties and may contribute to corrosion or chemical changes. Monitor water content according to the fluid supplier’s recommendations and maintain reservoir breathers. Seal compatibility should be considered together with fluid condition because a degraded fluid may no longer behave like the fresh product originally evaluated.

Residual mineral oil, flushing fluid and the new biodegradable product can create a mixture with properties that differ from either fluid alone. Follow the fluid and equipment suppliers’ changeover procedure, including draining, flushing or filter changes where specified. Label reservoirs and service equipment so later top-ups do not accidentally reintroduce the old oil.
For a large fleet, select representative machines and monitor seal leakage, oil temperature, filter condition, water content and hydraulic performance after conversion. Record pump model and FKM compound. A controlled trial can expose compatibility or system issues before dozens of machines are changed. If a seal fails, preserve it for dimensional and hardness comparison with an unused sample.
Once a fluid and FKM compound combination is qualified, document both in the approved-parts system. Purchasing should not substitute a different FKM grade or biodegradable fluid without review. Even products that appear equivalent on a general compatibility chart may use different additives or cure systems. Traceability prevents an unnoticed purchasing change from becoming a fleet-wide leak problem.
FKM’s strong resistance to many oils and chemicals makes it a valuable option for construction hydraulic pumps, but the correct engineering question is always “this FKM compound with this fluid at this temperature in this seal profile.” Qualify that pairing with supplier data, realistic testing and a controlled field trial. That is how a biodegradable fluid conversion achieves its environmental goal without sacrificing pump reliability.
