Accumulators hold energy under pressure for long periods and may then cycle rapidly. An FKM oil seal can be valuable where heat and hydraulic-fluid compatibility are demanding, but the material must retain recovery after long dwell.
A seal that stays compressed for hours or days can gradually lose elastic recovery. Even a premium FKM oil seal should be checked for compression-set performance at the actual temperature. A high-pressure oil seal needs enough long-term rebound to maintain contact when the accumulator cools or pressure changes.
Charge and discharge cycles can repeatedly change deformation and create local heating. Choose each FKM oil seal with the cycle frequency and expected temperature rise in mind. A hydraulic seal should be qualified under representative dwell and cycling rather than only a short static pressure test.
Depending on the accumulator design, gas permeation and rapid decompression can become important. A high-pressure oil seal must remain stable when pressure is released and should be evaluated for the specific gas, fluid, and decompression rate.
FKM is widely used with many oils and demanding industrial fluids, but compound formulation still determines the final compatibility. Validate every FKM oil seal against the exact medium. Repeated hydraulic seal leakage after long service may result from chemical aging or permanent set rather than visible wear.
Stored pressure will exploit any unsupported gap. Backup rings, strong shoulders, and controlled clearances keep the seal stable. Support prevents a high-pressure oil seal from extruding during charge cycles and high-temperature operation.
Document maximum pressure, precharge gas, fluid, temperature range, dwell time, cycle frequency, decompression rate, gap, hardware finish, and leakage limit. A properly selected FKM oil seal can provide predictable life when these inputs are controlled. A hydraulic seal qualification should include post-dwell leakage and recovery checks.
FKM is a strong accumulator material when heat and fluid chemistry justify it, but material alone is not the solution. The right FKM oil seal must manage dwell and recovery, while the right high-pressure oil seal design controls extrusion, cycling, and decompression.
